Glass Bongs where they come from and what they are

We all know what bongs are, but where do they really come from?

Historians and archaeologists relentlessly search for proofs and evidences embodied in prehistoric and ancient artefact’s found in various places and coming from various times. All these clues help to form the story of hemp and cannabis use in various cultures, up until today. Many serious researches have been done in this area and a number of respected researchers have devoted their whole careers to this particular field. Many prehistoric findings confirm the use of cannabis in earliest times. But where is pot smoking coming from? How exactly did they smoke cannabis and what kind of pipes did they use? What was the bong made from: glass? Wood?

Right now there are a number of disagreement when it comes to answering these simple questions. It’s an established fact that inhaling incenses was practiced since ancient times in many parts of Asia. But many findings are pointing that smoking cannabis probably first started after the discovery of America. When the first European settlers met Native Americans, they have quickly learned about smoking tobacco from them. Smoking tobacco and some other herbs, was an essential part in various religious ceremonies of Native American cultures. Later, the smoking of tobacco spread through the trading routes to the rest of the world and at some point, someone somewhere discovered how to use cannabis with pipes.

On the other hand, some other sources claim that smoking marijuana with pipes came originally from the Middle East, specifically from the Arab culture, where pipe smoking was widespread and popular, especially with the use of Narghile’s. Perhaps both stories are correct, and the criss-crossing of influences from America and Asia created what we know today as bongs and pipes.

But the story doesn’t end here. Recent archaeological discoveries have revealed that some sort of pipes for using cannabis were used in believe it or not Africa, long time ago. The primitive African pipes were made of naturally available materials like animal horns, primitive pottery, gourds or other available materials. It is well known that Arab merchants operated on trade routes spanning all the way from central Africa to India and back to the other side of the world, to Europe.

The first pipes were quite primitive and actually such kind of primitive pipes were used for a quit long time. When did the first glass pipes appear? Once more, no one knows for sure, but glass making techniques have been known in Egypt and Iraq for thousands of years. The thing is that this technology was extremely expensive and only kings and rulers had access to it. Artfully made glass pieces were sometimes expensive as jewels were!

Real and widespread use of glass pipes started only in modern times. In modern times before glass pipes, all that was available were ceramic and plastic pipes.

First glass pipes became available during the golden years of the Hippy era, the early ’70s and ’80s. Some pipe historians mention the name of a famous contemporary glass artist Bob Snodgras as most influential on the development of modern glass pipes. Mr. Snodgras was the artist who discovered the fuming method of glass pipe making. Fuming is a process by which small amounts of gold or silver are added to the glass pipe, which creates beautiful effects when the pipe is being used. Nowadays modern technologies are used and many other technological improvements have been made, such as use of various oxides, flame-works and so on. Due to their beautiful designs and effortless use, glass pipes are the most used devices for smoking cannabis. And as this trends continues to grow more and more people choose to use glass pipes for their pot smoking habits.

FSHR BARREL-STEM Ceramic pipes

If you read about the quest for the perfect pipe and it
doesn’t motivate you to enjoy the benefits of FSHR art,
you are completely crazy! These pipes are amazingly perfect and the BARREL-STEM pipes are incredibly amazing. (The Perfect Pipes
)

fshr barrel-steam pipeThe Quest For The Perfect Pipe.
I have been making pipes for many years. During this time I started
on my quest to make the perfect pipe. I found glass to always smoke clean as long as you keep it clean and that’s not that easy to do. Glass like these cool glass pipes at http://www.smokewire.com/glass-pipes.html also restricted my creativity. Now ceramics was the answer to my creative dreams, I could design more or less anything I wanted to, but ceramics had it’s own negative taste which progressively got worse with use. The ceramic pipes of old were placed on a stand with a support inside an upright pipe. This ment lots of pipes could fit in the kiln which meant cheap. YES CERAMICS WERE CHEAP AND NASTY especially comparing to pieces like this glass bubbler pipe: http://www.smokewire.com/bubblers/waterbubbler7inch.html. So this ancient art form, which flourished in the 60′s Norcal USA, more or less disappeared as smokers increased and so did their need for a more refined smoke, the glass pipe. Glass now flourishes but still not perfect with many flaws. IF ONLY I COULD GET CERAMICS TO SMOKE AS CLEAN AS GLASS. I could and I did.

FSHR barrel-stem ceramic pipe

Ceramic coffee cups are coated with food-safe glass. After a cup is fired it is then dipped in clear glass glaze (powdered glass mixed with a colored bonding solution.) for it’s final firing. As the heat starts to melt the powdered glass, the bonding solution resolves and allows a clear glass skin to form. This common kitchen cup can only be dented with a diamond tipped drill. Why aren’t pipes made this way? The cup doesn’t have stand problems like the pipe does to achieve a glass inside.

ceramic-Pipe

…… And so armed with information I set out to design pipes to fit designed stands so as to fire fully dipped ceramic pipes. The result was good, no trace of the nasty taste.
The down fall of the designs incorporated a wide mouth piece to balance on the stand without touching the glazed glass insides. Only the sharp point of the stand left the tiniest hole in the glass skin deep inside. A hole inside worried me a lot. I fired samples and distributed them to friends and friends of friends for testing. The result was that pipes all started (after a year) to develop their own taste, unfortunately nasty. The wide mouth piece made them incredibly efficient but harsh, very harsh.

ceramic Pipe

…I SOLVED ALL THE PROBLEMS.

I threw away the stands and incorporated stands into the designs and layed them down flat in the kiln fully dipped with only the built-in stands wiped glazed free for firing. IT WORKED PERFECTLY and the pipes also were just perfect for bowl loading standing firm on their built-in stands.

I now did not have to use a large mouth piece in my designs, so I changed them just enough to take away the harshness at the same time leaving them as large as possible for efficiency. IT WORKED PERFECTLY. After four years of development I now have a range selected from my most successful designs which….

1. Smokes like glass, but better, a lot better.( The large smoke capacity makes carbing easy and quick repeatable carbing allows you to fill your lungs as much as you can wish for.)

2. Doesn’t get hot. (Just like a ceramic cup that’s used for boiling hot liquids, these pipes allow you to fill your lungs without the worry of scorching ones fingers.)

3. Doesn’t break easily. (If dropped on a hard surface they may chip and remain perfectly smokable as long as the inside doesn’t get damaged due to a pipe hitting concrete or some other similar surface. With concrete it’s luck if it breaks or not, like a coffee cup it’s just the angle it strikes the floor.)

4. Incredible easy to clean.(Simply run the hot water through the pipe As hot as you fingers can bear. Giving it a good hard rinse fill the pipe with water, block the carb with a finger and shake the pipe until your finger get uncomfortably hot. Let your finger cool off and repeat the process several times. You can also use a pipe cleaning spray to make the process even easier.)

ceramic Pipe

NOT THE PERFECT PIPE?

Now there is something I didn’t tell you is while improved development was going on I came to the realization that a pipe could never be perfectly efficient for smoking. I’ts the basic concept of a pipe stem being designed to filter out tars ect, thus allowing a smoother draw. With the increased popularity of smokable aromatic herbs the need is to receive the full benefits of the pipe and not let a pipe stem filter it out. Many will use paper to increase efficiency. The first two puffs are good but harsh and becomes nastier as you smoke it down. I NOW WANTED TO MAKE A PIPE THAT SMOKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH LIKE THE FIRST TWO PUFFS OF PAPER. I needed a pipe without a stem. I threw out the normal stem and designed a barrel like shape, made so wide that the smoke gets to you before it touches the inside of the barrel.

ceramic Pipe

IT WORKS PERFECTLY. Yes I now have a range of BARREL-STEMS (The Perfect Pipes) and they need only one third of the smoke for effective use. INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE.

Now what will happen if I can make glass pipes smokes as well as my ceramic pipes?

……so the quest carries on.

The Percolator Effect

Today we will be looking at the interesting effects of a percolator.
Through an illustrated video, we will learn what a percolator does, how it’s to be
used and what is a percolator effect.

Before we go into the details, here are the basics:
A water pipe percolator can be considered as a small additional chamber that is
placed within the shaft of the pipe/bong.

The primary function of this percolator is to provide a cooling effect on the smoke
through smoke-water interaction. This process provides heat exchange thro
dissolution and hence minimizes health hazards.

Percolators are available is different forms such as pedestal, dome and tree.
The purpose of all kinds of percolators is to provide another layer of filtering the
smoke – through water.

Bongs use the diffuser effect, which works by utilizing the difference between the
pressure at the bottom and the top outlets. The difference in pressure at the
outlet is due to the suction by the user’s lungs. The fluid at the inlet which is a
mixture of smoke, vapor and water begins to drift towards the bottom of the
water, where the pressure of the water causes the mixture to break into small air
bubbles. The bubbles then flow through the water and raise at the outlet; thus
getting cooled and purified by water simultaneously.

In this video, we illustrate the tree percolator through a beaker water bong:

As you can notice, the tobacco is lightly packed to allow free air flow. The bong
has been filled with water and the flame is lit as it is being gently drawn by our
user through steady whiffs.

Once the tobacco starts burning, the smoke begins to fill the beaker at the
bottom, and the diffusion process begins at the percolator.

Watch closely, as the percolator instantly begins the cooling-cum filtering
process. The smoke from the bottom chamber begins to gather in the upper shaft
of the pipe, now visibly cleaner and cooler. Pause the video at 0:40 for a moment
to see the difference the percolator can make! The smoke at the upper shaft is as
white as snow when compared to the bottom chamber.

Apparently, you shouldn’t be looking for Marijuana on Craigslist!

Anamicka Dave, 29, of New Mexico, was in for a surprise when her supposed
dealer turned out to be an undercover-cop!

Cops were attracted by Anamica’s ad posting on Craigslist looking for marijuana.
Police said that they were surprised to see such a casual ad and wondered if this
was in-fact not a posting by another undercover officer.

Once verified that it was not the case, cops got in touch with her through text
messages, posing as a dealer.

Dave posted on the “Casual Encounters” section of Craigslist mentioning that she
was new to town and was “looking for Mary Jane.”

Things were not so pleasant after all, when Dave was taken into custody for
trying to buy marijuana, an illegal product.

A police officer was quoted saying that he was surprised and amused with the
plain nature of the ad and wondered if another officer was posting this ad as a
trap. He had to do a double check before he actually got to Dave.

An easy catch that was!
